Week 2_Resonse_Kailey Gaskin
Sorry, this is late, not feeling very well :-(
My favorite video this week was the walkthrough of Roman Signer's Seesicht/Lake View. The first few seconds of the video was a pan out over the lake which, with the ambient sounds of nature and the seagulls floating in the water, is incredibly picturesque and serene. And as the camera pans back to the original point, it keeps going and reveals the dark structure which is a stark contrast to the colorful, natural beauty. As she nears the mouth of the tunnel, there is a creepy feeling. Almost foreboding and suspenseful. The feeling as she walks down the tunnel is comparable to a horror movie where you know there is about to be a jumpscare. The light at the bottom and the child crying did not help the fearful nature. Once at the bottom though, the fish was a wonderful surprise. I have fish myself, therefore I am greatly fond of their presence. The child changing their tone to a cheerful wonderous mood gives the video a childlike wonder at this point. The audio is unaltered, unlike the other videos, making it so the viewer's emotions are not manipulated to how the artist intends the viewer to feel. I was so intrigued by this video that I did some outside research. I found out this is sort of an interactive sculpture by Roman Signer made for the Kunsthaus Zug's 25th Anniversary. (The Kunsthaus Zug is a musuem.) It took 5 years for planning and putting it in place and it will be up until 2025.
