Week 7 Response Kailey Gaskin

I chose Gary Hill's "Primarily Speaking" this week.

The overall tone of the video for me is sort of creepy. Reminds me of the Heaven's Gate cult videos done by Marshall Herff Applewhite Jr.. The beginning being completely distorted then cutting to comprehendible phrases is a stark contrast, like the beginning is trying to obtain your undivided attention. The videos that are vaguely relating to the phrases being said adds a layer of confusion hidden in what seems like an explanation. It makes me wonder, is he describing the videos or are the videos going along with his words. Is this some sort of brain washing? When reading the explanation of the side, the work is about perception and it seems there are different colors with the videos down a hallway. From what I see, I believe the strange videos vary from which color screen they play from. It would be interesting to know if this was some sort of social emotional experiment to see what each person felt afterward. Everyone who views is supposed to have a different way of perceiving the display. I really enjoy how this plays with the mind and has no real explanation from what I can tell. I find psychology very interesting and would love to know what each person felt after viewing the display and how it varied in-between each person.

  1. Hey Kale, I responded to this video too. I called it avant-garde–fancy word, I know. I liked the video because of the glitchiness of it. I really didn't connect the words being spoken to the videos shown, but the narrator said things that were like "choose a path" which makes sense for the road signs. Good post :-)
