Week 7_Response_ Alex Langmann
This week I have chosen to write about Gary Hill’s “Primarily Speaking.” There are two videos playing side by side, that seem to show similar things. The background is a weird amalgamation of shapes and colors. At first the voiceover seems to be almost distorted, but it slowly becomes clearer what the voice is saying. It seems to be almost nonsensical in nature, speaking in an odd tone of voice that makes the viewer feel almost disturbed by what they’re watching. Personally, this video made me uncomfortable in an odd way that I enjoyed. It was extremely unsettling to look at and listen to, but I almost felt calm; as if I knew something was wrong, but couldn’t help but continue watching anyways, lulled into a comfortable security.

Alex, I also agree with your comment about how the video was weirdly enjoyable. It was hard to understand the audio, but I felt like Gary Hill did this purposefully to add to the eerie effect of the video.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the video is pretty nonsensical, especially the script which doesn't make sense and the eerie way he read it.
