Week_7_Response_Kenneth Cage

For this week, I chose to watch Matthew Barney's Cremaster.

Visually, I've noticed that there are many circular objects and features. From the tables to the architecture to the features of the women, it all has a curvilinear appeal to it. There is a woman under a table who is wrapped around one of the legs or possibly a column. There are also several grapes present in this movie. The aesthetic seems to capture the essence of the 1940s or 1950s. The dancing women and the music that played during those scenes felt like a callback to that time period. There were also women in military uniforms that replicated that era as well. The dancing women are on a blue football field that has a pill-like symbol on it. They are making formations with each other to create images from a bird's eye view.

I think this film explores feminity and individualism as a woman. The women in the uniforms don't have any music while they are on this plane(?) and it seems to be very stern and monotonous. Then there is an interesting duality with the woman under the table having a music track to her and being very dramatic and melancholy. The dancing women represent women celebrating one another, especially their vagina. Openly talking about it can be a bit taboo so I think Barney's intentions were to be subtle about that conversation. During the 90s, it was a time to be bold and create change so this film fits into that.

  1. Hiiii Kenny, I enjoyed reading your long response! I actually picked the same video as you but your concept in the second paragraph made me think deeper into it. The thought that this video could have symbolized "felinity and individualism's as a woman" would've never went through my mind until you brought it up. I personally believe that was very good insight on the video. It was said that the video was about a self-enclosed aesthetic system which consisted of a five feature-length films that explore processes of creation. Great post, keep up the great work!
