The first two videos were private, so I had to watch "Primarily Speaking." For most of the video, there are two videos playing in small boxes. There is a disembodied narrator reading a nonsensical script. Something I found interesting was that the audio alternates between left and right audio feeds. The video on the corresponding side gets a jump-cut as he says each word. The background is made up of color bars, as well as some solid color shapes that change whenever he talks over a synthesizer.
I liked the attention to detail in the video. I'm sure it was very difficult to time each cut in the videos with each word. I couldn't really follow the script because it made no sense, but sometimes the videos reflected what he was saying. Also, alternating the audio feeds was clever. Not only is he making art with video, but through the audio as well.

I thought it was also very interesting how the audio alternated between the different audio feeds. I also feel like Gary Hill made the audio difficult to understand on purpose, adding to the eerie feel of the film.
ReplyDeleteI also thought that the attention to detail was interesting, as well as the nonsensical way of the script. The script itself was built from idiomatic expressions, so it makes sense that the sense would be lost.
ReplyDeleteI liked the collage effect and in this one too. The narration was a little weird, and so was the rest of the clip honestly. But the techniques used were still interesting.
