For this week, I decided to focus on Doug Aitken's "Migration".
This video showcases animals in environments that would normally inhabit people. It specifically seems that these animals are in motels, and shows the viewers how these animals interact with this space. There were animals like the bull, the mountain lion, and the horse that inhabit the space. You have a deer that drinks from the pool and a beaver "bathing" in a tub. We also have several shots of different kinds of birds. There were peacocks, a hawk, and an owl. There seemed to be a focus on wild, mammalian animals and several kinds of birds. Light was also a central focus, with the lightbulbs glowing and coming more into focus. Off-screen, there were several other screens behind the main one, spaced sparingly apart.
I think the theme in this video is about nature vs manmade. These wild animals are in these manmade motels with manmade pools, televisions, and light bulbs. All of these things have been manufactured by men and I think Aitken was trying to highlight that we are taking over the spaces that were made for nature through our conquest of the artificial. We are further pushing animals out of nature and into the spaces designated for humans. I think Aitken wanted to highlight that all the animals present want to reclaim the motel that was once their natural habitat.
